From
14 to 18 March, four BCA members - Steve Burnell (Leamington Spa),
Les Whittle (Morpeth), Bill Armstrong (Leek) and David Hodgkins
(Leamingtom Spa) went
to Nunspeet, the Netherlands for the 18th AD Bestman Memorial
Six
Nations
Tournament. Teams from England, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland,
Belgium and the Republic of Ireland took part. Each team played
once against every other team. Teams scored 2 points if they won
a match and 1 point for a drawn match. This event is held every
2 years, with nations taking
turn to be the host.
The
photos show Steve, Les and David at the board in one of our recent
tournaments.
England,
with Steve as Captain, had a fine start, beating Switzerland 3.5-0.5
in Round 1 and Belgium 3-1 in Round 2. In Round 3 they beat the
Netherlands
2.5-1.5 but Germany moved ahead by beating Belgium 3.5-0.5.
England
lost 0-4 to Germany in Round 4, but regained their form with a
3.5-0.5 win over Ireland in the final round. This was enough to
give England second place with 8 match points, just behind Germany
on 10. This was a very good result for the BCA team in view of
the strength of the German team.
Next
came Ireland (6), The Netherlands (3), Switzerland (2) and Belgium
(1).
Steve
scored four draws on Board one, Bill Armstrong three wins and
one draw on board two. Les Whittle scored the same on board three,
and David
Hodgkins the same on board four.
