Ray
Walmisley
November 2003
One of our newer members, Ray Walmisley, died in mid November
of last year after a long battle against prostate cancer. He had
played some of us at correspondence chess and had shown himself,
despite his considerable age, to be a knowledgeable and formidable
opponent.
As mentioned in Personalia in the August 2003 edition of the B.C.A.
Gazette, Ray was a loyal and hardworking member of the National
Correspondence Chess Club, and was recently elected its President.
He also wrote extensively and regularly for the En Passant magazine,
and later became its games editor. Ray had been Club Match Captain,
using his diplomacy to encourage correspondence players all over
the UK.
Sport
was another of his keen interests especially football, and he
was always hopeful for the success of his local team – “Pompey”!
By those who knew him, Ray will be missed for his friendship and
sense of humour.
