The B.C.A. Gazette
has been in production for most of the Association’s history but
unfortunately no back issues are known to exist prior to 1964. The first
surviving Gazette is dated January 1964 and is numbered 65. Allowing four
issues per year and no breaks, we can assume that the Gazette began
publication in January 1948.
The only complete run
of copies of the Gazette between 1964 and 1977 appear as supplements in bound
volumes of the Braille Chess Magazine in the RNIB National Library. The B.C.A.
Archive holds a complete collection of Braille Gazettes covering the period
January 1978 to date, with a few issues available pre-1978. In addition to
these, there are annual reports for the years 1960 1961 and 1962. These
look like they were compiled from articles in the quarterly Gazettes for
those years. Note that occasional reports about the B.C.A. appeared in the
Braille Chess Magazine since its founding in 1934.
This index consists
of the list of contents for each Gazette, with some remarks added in
brackets for additional clarification. Some of the pre-1990 articles can be
found on cassette in the publication “British Blind Play
Chess”, which can be downloaded from the B.C.A. website.
Click
here to download the B.C.A. Gazette index.
The index finishes in
April 1997, since later Gazettes are available on the B.C.A. website.
Click here to go
to the B.C.A. Gazette section.
Explanation of some
Regular features in the Gazette:
“We have
heard” consists of news about members;
“Sharpen your
wits” has positions and solutions;
“Meet the B.C.A.”
consists of members’ profiles.
