Another excellent weekend!

3 points form this weekend ensures that we have now accumulated 6 match points form the first 8. A strong start, and one that can only be build upon.

Round 3 saw us against Nottingham (2), who fielded a somewhat weaker team than expected.

On top board, Colin Crouch sacrificed a piece for an attack, but couldn’t find a decisive follow-up. He took a perpectual in the end.

On board 2, Tyson was not feeling so great and after some difficult decision-making moves in the opening went wrong for him, he was eventually ground out by his young and talented opponent.

I, on board 3, had an excellent attacking game with black and had the most promising result of the day.
Board 4-6 all played well, securing draws at crucial times.

Our last-minute stand-in Norman Andrews, played excellently throughout the weekend and gained the team 2 valuable draws, providing a firm foundation from where the rest of the team could spring from. A dogged and professional performance to say the least!

On Sunday, we just about scraped through against Glos. Gambits, who fielded a indepth team. Colin Crouch’s nice attacking win on board clinched the victory for us.

Tyson was clearly winning on board 2, with a few extra pawns, but some sloppy play towards the time control allowed his opponent to get counter-play and this was enough to secure him a draw.

I had a disappointing draw on board 3, where I set out aggressively and had every intension of blasting through my opponent, who defended well and resisted all my efforts. Indeed, towards the end, I was standing worse and was fortunate to have a draw punted at me.

Stephen Burnell and Norman Andrews pulled in with excellent draws and Bill, who had stood worse at one point, began a king-side and gained some excellent attacking possibilities. In the end, he was probably winning, but accepted a perpectual to secure the victory for the team.

So, 6/8 and onwards and upwards we go!
