Results

Well, another successful weekend at the 4NCl. Results and games are below.

The games are currently incomplete, since I am still waiting for Steve Hilton to submit his.

On Sunday, we played Littlethorpe 2 and eventually came out comfortable winners, with the top 3 boards converting their games clinically and efficiently. Bill Armstrong and Tristram Cole (who was a last-minute replacement for Steve Burnell, who came down with the flu), both got well deserved draws. Both bottom boards played excellently this weekend, holding their own against some promising players.

Steve Hilton played the Alekhine defence and allowed white a huge advantage in the opening and was slowly but inevitably ground out through the center.

On Sunday, we were in 10th place, dragging ourselves back into the main pack of contenders. We came across KJCA Kings, which is a team full of juniors. Naturally, with juniors, you never know their true strength and they certainly proved a tough opponent.

Crouch slowly but inevitably outplayed his youngster on top board, played well with his minor pieces and outwitted his opponent with some subtle maneuvering.

Tyson had an excellent attacking game and comprehensively demonstrated that taking the “poisoned pawn” in the Sicilian Nadjorf isn’t the best idea in the world.

On board 3, I had to fend off a C3 Sicilian hack and had to spend a lot of time weaving my way through the tactics, leaving myself 5 minutes to complete 10 moves. The time scramble occurred, with me successfully exchanging pieces, declining a draw in the meantime, but at the time control itself, which I just made, a rook pawn ending arose, which I could simply not win. A draw soon was agreed.

Steve Hilton set up solidly, but came up with a new idea in the King’s Indian, allowing black to play Ne4 and equalize. His opponent offered the draw soon after and surprisingly, Steve declined it and soon after lost material and was inevitably ground out.

Bill Armstrong had an excellent attacking win on board 5, winning brilliantly with some very clever tactics.

Tristram prepared well for his opponent, got the setup his was looking for and pushed hard to break his opponent down, who came up with some suspicious tactics that gave him 2 minor pieces for an active rook in a queenless middle-game. Tristram should have converted this ending, but agreed a draw as the match was just about secured at that point.

So, two efficient wins over the weekend, both matches 4-2 winning results. We march on and have gained back ground and will be just blow the leading pack. The race is now afoot and we are now back in the reckoning for promotion.
