Report

The B.C.A. went into the last round of this season having already achieved its principal objective that being to have bettered last season’s performance. Having reached the 10 points mark and obtained more game points than last time, any results today would be a bonus.

Our opponents, “King Support Pawn” were certainly strong enough to cause us problems. Tyson on top board certainly found this having got himself into a terrible tangle and at one stage was two pawns down. His only hope, a very very thin one was that his outside passed pawn could do some damage. His massive advantage on the clock gave him another trick and his opponent simply crumbled under time and positional pressure, allowed the passed pawn to advance, let it slip through and blundered away a clearly winning position. The cheeky win by Tyson won us the match!

Chris Ross gained a clear and strong positional advantage in his position and stole an offered pawn. His position looked unbreechable and he entered into a rook ending thinking that the conversion of the extra pawn should be simply enough. However, a slight positional miscalculation allowed his opponent to get active on the 7th rank with his rooks. Chris, thinking he had every covered, allowed the annoying rooks to settle onto the 8th rank and force a perpetual. However, when the draw was indeed agreed, Chris could have played on and attempted to win, not realizing that his king could run the length of the board to hide behind his own rook!

Sean Loftus played a relatively uneventful draw on board 3. And was slightly on top for most of the game. However, neither side seemed to be pushing for much a draw was soon reached.

Tristram Cole on board 4. won an easy exchange against a young and upcoming female player, allowed her to get nasty tactics, got his own king exposed and allowed his opponent to play some very nice tactics and win with relative ease.

Roger Waters had an interesting on board 5. attempting to play it positional and got things blockaded, striving for a good knight against bad bishop ending. This was mostly successful until he allowed his opponent to penetrate with his queen. Pawns dropped off and it looked as though black was breaking through, until an outside passed A pawn was flung down the board and promoted. A perpetual check was finally reached although white could have played on attempting to win.

Mark Kirkham once again pulled the win out of the bag for the team clinching a valued point on bottom board. Having been suffering the whole game, being a pawn down and having to defend a passive knight end-game, his opponent allowed a little tactic that allowed a passed pawn to sneak through.

So, the team won, achieving 12 match points, clearly bettering last year’s performance and ending up only 1 point behind a team that got promoted….Next season should be very interesting indeed….
