Report

Another excellent Saturday match for the team. We pulled out our top 5 players and gave one of our juniors a run out and no doubt he obtained a tremendous amount of experience as his performance on Sunday well illustrated.

A very well hard-fought match eventually resulted in a draw with Chris grinding out a win and Steve Burnell unable to convert a pawn advantage having missed many winning opportunities.

Tyson took top board and lost for the first time for the B.C.A. pushing too hard with the white pieces, allowing his opponent some snappy tactics and was eventually overloaded on the king-side.

chris’ opponent setup aggressively but was extremely lax on the clock frequently forgetting to press it and thereby allowing himself to get into serious time trouble. A lot of wasteful time spending was also used up in the opening stages.
Chris offered a pawn to gain activity and missed an easier path to victory and had to carry his small advantage through into an end-game and converted neatly enough.

Steve Hilton’s game on board 3 was uneventful and a solid if somewhat unambitious draw was reasonably quickly agreed amongst the two players. A solid result if nothing else.

Bill Armstrong took board 4. for us this time, his recent results justifying his advancement through the board-order. He proved his worth and his high-placing by playing coolly and efficiently against a poorly-played setup. Tactics began to flow and white became far too ambitious and allowed himself to be snap-mated.

Steve Burnell won a clear pawn and ground away for hours attempting to convert the position. Many deep variations would have sufficed and the end-game was clearly at his begging, but Steve allowed too many simplifications and allowed the black king to become active and black clung to save the draw.

Alastair became nervous of his opponent threatening tacky tactics in the opening and went astray with his setup relatively quickly, leaving himself a pretty miserable position. Salvation was pretty unlikely and his opponent played smoothly and economically to convert the winning advantage.

A draw was a very respectable result and all team members played very well. We were slightly unlucky with Tyson’s first loss for us and Steve Burnell unlucky in not being able to convert his extra pawn.
