Report

A slightly disappointing result all in all. The match could have been better if a few more things had gone our way. However, the team performed well, played spiritually and were a victim of some bad luck.

Tyson played cleverly and imaginatively on top board and gradually built on his slight advantage, swapping pieces of slowly to increase his ever-growing plus. The end-game was well converted and the point thoroughly deserved.

Chris snatched the Mora gambit and had to face a slightly new move-order by white. He didn't respond accurately to it and was eventually forced to return the extra material when his opponent started throwing pieces through the centre. Chris saw nothing better than an equal opposite coloured bishop ending and a draw was quickly agreed.

Steve Hilton, perhaps buoyed by his clinical victory on the previous day and perhaps suffering ill-effects from a persistent cold and cough, played very aggressively against the Benoni and launched a king-side attack before being fully developed. His opponent rebuffed it easily enough and started counter-attacking opportunities down the queen-side. The end-game was always pretty hopeless for white.

Steve Burnell had a very bizarre game winning a pawn and then the exchange very comfortably. The conversion should have been simple enough but in time trouble, Steve panicked and returned the material to put himself into a horrible ending. He was pretty lucky to escape with the draw at the end.

Bill Armstrong played aggressively with the white pieces and came up with some imaginative manoeuvres to open things up, leading with his king in the attack! However, black slowly but surely pushed him back and things quietened down and a draw was soon reached.

Norman wragg slipped up in the opening and allowed his pawn structure to be massively weakened. White played on that and gradually built his positional plus up. A lot of shuffling around later, white converted his huge positional advantage.
