Report

Once again, we were placed against one of the stronger teams, and with our depleted team, a tough match was in prospect. The final score is perhaps slightly unjust, since we certainly played bravely and resourcefully enough to deserve something from the match.

Tyson took the black side of a king's Indian defence and nothing much happened in the game until a few pieces were exchanged, an equal position reached and a quick draw agreed.

Chris took the white side against the Bird's defence and his opponent gave himself doubled D pawns which were always going to be weak in an end-game. Chris fought off potential attacks, grabbed a pawn in the late middle-game, came out with a clever resource and converted the resulting ending, although having been offered two draws in the meantime! He saw the result of the match was already decided and played on for experience and with the hope of converting a slight but pulling advantage, thereby being the first B.C.A. player to score 100% from a weekend this year!

Steve set up passively against the queen's gambit accepted and allowed his opponent to build a comfortable advantage. Queens came off quickly and white's slight spatial advantage eventually led to the win of a pawn and the grind in the end-game was inevitable. Steve fought bravely and might have had chances in the knight ending, but was never able to find the correct path.

Bill once again set up solidly and had a passive but dynamic position out of the opening. He expanded and pushed for possibilities, introducing some tricky tactics, but black fended them off easily enough and converted slowly but surely into a drawn ending.

Richard Murphy took a strong position out of the unsound Blackmar Diemar gambit and was extremely on-top after winning the dark-squared bishop. However, he allowed his opponent to get tactical on the king-side and once the white queen had penetrated the black defences, the game was all over.

Alastair showed the most resourcefulness out of all, playing on in a very tactical and open game. Material loss meant he had to find counter-play, and after having gained it, entered into a very difficult situation where both kings were seriously exposed. An end-game resulted and Alastair held his own for a long, long time, being at least equal and searching for a possible win. Unfortunately, a cross-check allowed his opponent to swap off favourably and a resulting lost end-game was reached. Very unfortunate for Alastair but tremendous experience gained in the process and hopefully, a lot learned.

All in all, a reasonable weekend. High points need to be won in the final weekend to ensure the B.C.A. of a good result this year.
