Report

The B.C.A.'s first win this year. Saturday saw us pitted against the bottom of the league and it certainly wasn't a foregone conclusion. Unfortunately, Steve Hilton had to withdraw at short-notice due to Angina troubles. Alastair Irving very kindly stepped in at the last minute and although suffered two losses, played resourcefully and efficiently and gained a tremendous amount of experience.

We out-graded all of the top 3 boards and Tyson having opened up with a slightly unusual move-order sequence in the French defence, found himself in a dominating position. A short tactical sequence gained him easy material and his opponent resigned without further to do.

Chris Ross built up solidly against his Spanish opponent and was allowed to post a strong bishop on c5, dominating all of the dark squares. White failed to challenge this wonderfully outposted piece and once a king-side attack was launched, the rest was history.

Steve Burnell built up solidly against his opponent delayed Bogo-Indian defence and although pressured for most of the game, wasn't able to find a way through black's solid defence. A draw was an inevitable result.

Bill Armstrong played solidly with the black pieces and although attempted to get some activity, was somewhat blocked in his attempts and his opponent closed it out with an easy draw.

Richard Murphy was exceedingly unfortunate to draw his game, having won an easy rook in the opening. He proceeded in the correct manner to grind the result out but became loose in his late middle-game play. Black created activity, started gobbling up pawns and got excellent counter-play for his material. Richard was struggling towards the end to hold the newly created passed pawns and an equal end-game was reached.

Alastair was perhaps lacking match practice and although set up solidly enough, allowed some simplistic tactical sequences that allowed his opponent to gain some material. The result wasn't really in doubt once that had happened.

Despite this, Alastair battled bravely and imaginatively, but couldn't do anything to avoid the final result.
