Report
Again,
yet another disappointing day at the races. The score margin is
no illustration of the quality of games or on how we were outplayed.
The
bright light of the day and the weekend was Steve Hilton's excellent
win with the white pieces on board 4. Coolly outplaying Cornelia
Klein from Germany in the Cambridge springs.
On
top board, Tyson had to face a slightly unusual setup by white against
the Sicilian. The game developed naturally enough where the white
A3 pawn seemed to be a bit of a waste of a tempo. However, Tyson
seemed to be unable to exploit the weakness and loss of tempo by
white and setup slightly passively. White built up a strong advantage
in the early middle-game and offered a surprise draw when he was
stood better. Tyson, after a short think, considering his position
to be rather suspicious, was glad to accept.
Chris
Ross stumbled slightly in the opening but effectively pinned black's
king's knight detaining black long enough to illustrate that his
opening strategy was floored. Black wasted time by playing Bb4-Bd6-Be7
and Chris then built up a strong but definite advantage.
However,
playing quickly to an attack to his queen, Chris dropped it back
unaware that black had a cheap tactic to win an exchange. Chris
held for a long time illustrating that the exchange wasn't much
of an advantage. However, black converted into an ending, activated
his king and sacked the exchange back at the appropriate time and
converted easily enough.
Bill
tried to get queen-side action in the King's Indian when white pushed
through the center. Black's queen-side action wasn't simply enough
and white's central pushes got him a strong advantage and the tactics
flowed for him. White finished off nicely enough.
Board
4. Saw Klein playing the Cambridge springs and returning the black
queen to d8 instead of the more active c7. She made an attempt to
break out with a suspicious c6-c5 and allowed Steve to start attacking
the open files.
Black
tried to push in the center and fell for a nice tactic (Nxf5!),
and then was slowly but inevitably squeezed on the light squares.
Steve pushed around gradually building up his advantage whilst fending
off black's king-side intensions. Another pawn was stolen and rooks
exchanged to get into a good knight verses bad bishop ending. More
maneuvering by Steve and more pawn exchanges and the conversion
was cool, effective and professional!
David
Hodgkins got himself cramped down and made an awkward attempt to
break out on the queen-side after allowing his king to be stranded
in the center. He should have settled for a solid but passive lateral
2nd rank defense but recapturing on b6 with a rook effectively gave
him weak pawns, which droopped off to a simple tactic. White converted
without problem then.
Rob
played aggressively against the Pirc and allowed black to get more
tactical than he deserved. He allowed his pawn structure to be compromised
and went a pawn down without good compensation. He entered into
an ending where his pawn structure was always going to suffer and
black wriggled to push his advantage and converted economically
enough.
Once
again, a result that should never have been. A poor weekend for
the team and a weekend to forget soonest.
A shame
but yet, there are two weekends to go and our target is to win 4
out of the next 5 which will give us more points than last year,
which is our objective.
