Report

Another close match and perhaps another draw offer issue is to blame!

Sunday in round 4. Saw us pitted against Brown Jack who again, pulled out a strong team. We can take much comfort in that we took 2.5 points of them, the most anybody has yet this season!

Tyson didn't have an interesting game on top board, where he took the black pieces in the king's Indian and although played solidly enough, there wasn't much prospect from either side. White didn't have much ambition and the game wangled its way down to the draw without incident.

Chris seemed to be crushing his opponent in the opening launching a strong looking king-side attack but his opponent blasted out in the center creating enough counter-play to put Chris off who handled the attack poorly. Black snatched a pawn and managed to deflect the attack and transposed the whole outlook on the game, eventually exchanging everything off into a favorable ending for black! the position resulting was certainly better for black and white had a strong uphill battle in front of him to hold it, if at all possible, but black took the easy option out and offered the draw when he was able to repeat the position and Chris, not being able to push for the win when the team was already down, was forced to accept.

Steve Burnell had to face a very interesting pawn sack in the Caro-Kan and got himself tangled up in all kinds of a mess. At one stage, it looked as though he may be struggling his way out of it, but his opponent had it all under hand and finished off Steve nicely enough!

Steve Hilton on board 4. Finally banished the demons of nerves and showed his true colours by thoroughly out-playing is opponent in a benoni and gradually squeezing him until the stage he was able to wriggle his queen into his opponent's half. The exploitation of the light squares is commendable and the finish is pretty!

John Gallagher had a hard-fought game on board 5. And although much better towards the end, itís doubtful at all, if he could win it. Although a more active rook, there doesn't seem a way to penetrate and a draw was soon reached, but a very interesting and difficult tussle it certainly was.

Board 6. Saw the stumbling block again. Richard seemed to be doing OK against the Forks Nocks and had a solid but prosperous position. His opponent in the time control offered the draw, and Chris, thinking that he was going to loose his own game, instructed Richard to play on. Richard, very short on time, pushed and over-stretched and his opponent got tactical and managed to sneak the win.

Again, the half point mattered! If Richard had accepted the draw, the match would have been drawn. Unfortunate, but maybe, the whole weekend just wasn't meant to be for us. Unlucky is the best word we can think of, but luck comes around and we'll get our day yet!
