Report

All in all, a disappointing weekend, although we can take Solis in the fact that we played two very strong teams and were very close on both occasions to taking points of them. Perhaps some poor advice from the captain could be laid to blame for the missed opportunities, but chess is sometimes like that.

On this weekend, Stephen Hilton (Greenock) was pulled out for the first time and made a respectable debut on board 4. Finishing off nicely on the Sunday.

Round 3. Saw us placed against Metropolitan who fielded a fairly strong side.

On top board, Tyson got his favourite unclear middle game and bamboozled his opponent in very complex tactics in the main line Sicilian, forcing through a neat sack of the exchange and then concluding with a very pretty mate, even being able to announce mate in 7!

Board 2. Saw Chris faced against a solid but unambitious English where he had to play dynamically but resourcefully. White played around a bit and lost some vital tempi allowing Chris to start opening things up and finally in the time scramble winning some vital material.

On board 3. Steve Burnell was doing absolutely fine against the King's Indian and had a small but clear space advantage. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, Steve dropped the exchange to a very simple tactic and his opponent grabbed it and converted clinically enough.

Stephen Hilton on board 4. Had a difficult start to his 4NCL career and had to face a slow and uneventful opening by his opponent. Although solid enough, white wasn’t going anywhere and exchanged pieces off heading for an equal ending. After having ran out of ideas, Steve attempted a blockade but allowed his opponent to march forwards on the king-side and slowly but inevitably, grind Steve down. Even then, Steve missed a few opportunities of blocking and securing the half point but nerves or pressure got to him and he was unfortunate to go down after a brave fight.

John Gallagher had to face the St. George and set up in stereotypical style. He got himself a fine strong position in the early middle-game and his opponent had to resort to a feeble attack, when in fact, it was white who only had any attacking possibilities. John however allowed the position to complicate and opened up the king-side for black instead of stealing a simple pawn. Having missed this clear opportunity of clinching an easy win, John then went on a bizarre attacking spree when simple positional chess would again have clinched an easy draw or at least, keep the initiative. John self destructed and allowed his opponent to blast down the king-side and soon wiped him out.

Richard Murphy on bottom board had a hard run of things. Richard very kindly stepped in at the last minute when Steve thacker pulled out on the Friday evening due to illness. Richard managed to get himself a comfortable position out of the opening and gradually put pressure on his opponent who made some very strange moves (rfc1!). Murphy wriggled about and managed to grab a pawn and was slowly but surely outplaying his opponent, who cheekily offered the draw. after some thought, Richard asked Chris for his thoughts, and Chris, unsure of the positions in the other games and not knowing Richard's position, told him to use his own judgment. Richard accepted the draw in a clearly won position!

That half point extra could have drawn the match if Chris had instructed Richard to play on and he had converted it.

A close match but obviously, not to be.
