Report

Round 2. Didn’t prove such a success for the team as we went down relatively easily to Slough Sharks who fielded a fairly strong side. Dropping points on the top 3 boards meant that any chance of a result was unlikely although Rob William's fantastic performance of board 4. Was the highlight of the day.

On top board, Tyson achieved easy equality out of the opening and agreed a very quick draw in 12 moves with his opponent.

Chris gained an obvious advantage out of the opening but seemed to loose his way in building upon it. He turned down an obvious win of a pawn for swift development but his opponent's accurate and active play ensured him of equality. Chris's position drifted and towards the end a draw was agreed in a slightly better position for black although the draw would probably be the inevitable result.

Steve Burnell got gradually but inexorably hacked with the grand-prix attack. Steve played passively and attempted to dabble in some suspicious tactics that were unsound and a clever tactic by his opponent towards the end led to the loss.

Rob Williams played dynamically, energetically and positionally outplayed his much stronger opponent on the white side of the Ruy Lopez. Rob gradually maneuvered his pieces in the manner of a player much stronger than Rob's own grade. His gradual probing eventual led to the win of a pawn and the resulting passed B pawn was slowly being pushed through. After reaching the first time control, Rob tried too push too quickly and offered his passed pawn as a temporary decoy for a king-side attack, missing the counter-play that his opponent could generate against Rob's king. The position was then simplified and Rob was extremely unfortunate to walk away with only half a point.

Yan had to face the closed Sicilian, which seemed a liking of the Slough team. Yan went for a wander with his knight in the opening which didn't lead too much and was gradually pushed back, and his king was shortly left gasping for room to run. The end came quickly enough.

Alastair was extremely daring by adapting the Alekhine's attack in the French defense. He didn't follow up though with the thematic Nb5 after the exchange of dark squared bishops and his own pawn-chain base, d4, was left weakened. Alastair tried a few nice tactical thrusts to baffle his opponent, but black defended accurately, wading through the complications and emerged a clear piece plus. The grinding out of the game was simple enough.

All in all, a weekend full of experience for our youngsters, some excellent performances by some individuals and at least we're off the mark!
