Report

The final round saw us against Warwick’s Select 2, fielded by mostly juniors. Experience told out eventually and the B.C.A. were able to walk away from the weekend with a total 100% clearance, taking 6/6 points and thereby tripling our whole-season's points! This raised us through the placings.

An inspired team performance and this result was especially pleasing since the team blended together to make a formidable force.

Steve Hilton was the main cog in this result though. Yet another, complete cool, methodical and simplistic chess player you will not see around and this allowed him in this game to steal a pawn and his calculated efficiency saw the rest out. His sole win put pressure on the rest of their players to make a result and naturally, solidness from the B.C.A. team ensured 5 draws, giving us that half point advantage to take the match.

Tyson got himself into difficulties against the French and was floundering around for a while. He lost his central pawn and was grappling for compensation as the match grew to its conclusion. As time pressure began to tell and the team was leading 2.5-1.5 at the time, he managed to see a sneaky tactic that appeared to win back his pawn. He whipped it out and promptly offered the draw. His opponent, not considering a possible variation that could have gained him extra material and a clear winning advantage, snaffled the draw offer up.

This draw allowed board 2 and Chris Ross to accept a draw offer that was perhaps miss-timed, and thereby clinch the match. Chris had a superior position, being a pawn up, that being a passed pawn on the 7th rank! However, white was blockading it well and progress would have been difficult but Chris was in a perfect position to push for the win if necessary. As it were, the draw sufficed.

Bill saw himself get into a tangle in the Philidor and when black's king-side attack came to nothing, Bill launched tactics down at the black king who was stranded in the centre. Tactics later and the black king and the dark squares were looking wobbly. F7 became a focus point but time became more of a crucial element. With minutes left, Bill offered a draw from a superior position and black was fortunate to get away with half the point.

Steve Hilton set up solidly against the C3 Sicilian, ignored white's weak attempt to disrupt his development (nh4?) and ganged up on the queen-side. White played passively, slowly and allowed Steve to steal his a pawn. The white king then took a march to G3 where it was not mated, but harassed and the ending was simple enough for Steve having won the 2nd pawn.

Very, very cool and very effecient. 3/3 wins and all carried out with excellent technique, composure and style. Well done Steve for a 100% performance and effectively clinching the match!

Hans opened with the English and tried to build pressure against an isolanee. His pressure didn’t' result in much and he allowed his opponent to start pushing his pawns through the centre. Bishops of opposite colours resulted and although white may be stood better, a draw was amicably agreed.

Board 6 saw a poor opening by white and Richard not pouncing on inaccurate play. He had the opportunity to bind white down and play against backward, isolated pawns but allowed white to eventually break out. Although superior in the ending, a blunder of a pawn and the exchange of heavy pieces resulted in a slightly better ending for black, but a draw was soon agreed.

A fine, astonishing conclusion to the season.

Well done to all that played and here's to a successful time!
