Report

Round 10 saw us placed against FCA Solutions who fielded a reasonably strong side. Unfortunately, one of their main players came down with food poisoning the previous night and hence, they had to drop a board, defaulting board 6 as a consequence. This meant that poor Richard Murphy had to go without a game again which was very unfortunate. His presence though was vital since it ensured us of the point and such occurrences can not be predicted.

Tyson completely flummoxed his opponent by whipping out a deeply-prepared variation of the anti-Marshall and was soon two exchanges and a pawn up without having broken sweat. The game was effectively over and his opponent could have respectfully resigned. He struggled on for a while but the outcome was always inevitable.

Board two saw a tempo loss for white in the closed Sicilian and Chris gained immediate equality. White came out with an interesting variation that appeared to allow white's knight to become ensconced in the black camp. Chris' sparkling refutation by offering an exchange sacrifice must have bamboozled white who proceeded to play weakly and after a few inaccuracies, blundered a pawn and then was forced to sack the exchange and go for a feeble attack before it all collapsed for him. His resignation came shortly after.

Board 3 saw Bill Armstrong set up solidly and he gradually grew pressure against black's incorrectly queen-side castled king. He fended of black's ineffective attack and began pushing through the queen-side. Things became tense and Bill sacked a pawn for the initiative.

Once he realised that the match was in fact over (we had already won 4-1), he proceeded to hit out viciously at the black king. A slight inaccuracy in his attack allowed black to slip out and Bill's attack dwindled away into nothingness leaving him with only material down and a lost position. Things ran their due course.

Hans had to face the restricting Maroczy bind and was slowly pushed back. He failed to open up the bind with f5, allowed white to exert pressure through the centre and eventually succumbed to some excellent tactics by white.

Steve Hilton pulled off yet another effective and efficient win. His slow, methodical style puts his opponent's under tremendous pressure as he leaves himself with little weaknesses. A gradual build-up of his forces, a cheeky snatch of a pawn and then the thrust at the black king-side, led ultimately to a crushing position. Steve converted neatly enough.

His second win against a strong opponent.
