Report

A fantastic start for the B.C.A. as we fought back from a 0-3 deficit to win the top 3 boards to scramble a draw when a defeat was staring us in the face! Some high-quality chess by Tyson, Chris and Steve Burnell drew us back from the brink when Rob Williams and our two new debutants, Yan Kit Chan and Alastair Irving went down against much stronger opposition.

This year, the 4NCL division 4. League takes place in Telford instead of West Bromwich. The hotel proved adequate although public transport too and from the venue is not easy.

Our team was weakened this weekend due to some of our players playing in the I.B.C.A. chess Olympiad in Spain and since the division 4. Has been split into two sections, the B.C.A. was placed in the bottom half.
Round 1. Saw us sited against Mindsportsltd.com who we also managed to draw with last year. Maybe the B.C.A. is their bogey-man team?!

On top board Tyson played energetically against the center-counter attack and reached a complex and tactical middle-game. Tyson proceeded to offer an unsound piece sacrifice but managed to psyche his opponent out by doing it. His opponent unwisely refused, lost the exchange and was duly ground out with accurate play by Tyson.

Chris ventured into a tactical battle with his opponent who played lackluster in the opening. White tried to be over-ambitious and Chris unusually entered into a tactical maze where he normally doesn't venture. The power of his bishops and the emergence of his pieces on excellent squares and the exposure of the white king ensured him of a comfortable advantage. Chris finished with a neat mate clinching the 2nd win of the recovery.

Steve Burnell offered an interesting pawn in the Grunfeld defense and went on the attack through the king-side. His opponent was apparently concerned about his king's safety and offered a piece for three pawns. However, his pieces weren't adequately coordinated and some accurate, if slow, end-game play by Steve soon converted the extra material. Thereby, being the star of the day by drawing the match for the team!

Rob Williams faced the C3 Sicilian and seemed to be doing absolutely fine against his opponent's slow build-up. Unfortunately, Rob was unable to exploit the d5 outpost created by white and unwisely gave up his light-squared bishop giving him chronic light-square weaknesses which he soon came to regret.

Yan Kit Chan, a new player for the team was perhaps overwhelmed or lacked experience in such a setting for he dropped a piece relatively early on his game and was always fighting to swindle his way back into the game. Although he fought bravely and came out with some good tactical threats, his opponent was always able to fend of Yan's thrusts and converted the extra piece accordingly. Nevertheless, Yan and Alastair who appeared on board 6. Would have gained massively from the experience and now they can go on and be well prepared for future rounds.

Alastair on board 6. Faced the 3. Bb5+ Sicilian and although setup accurately enough, he created himself a fatal weakness on d6 by moving his e7 pawn. This weakness was pounced on by his opponent who gradually, but effectively, ground Alastair down, who was always fighting for equality. He did at some time appear to have reached it, but failed to secure his king's position and opened himself up to the penetration of his opponent's rooks leading to a swift finish.
