Report
The result of a poor night spent, or just another bad day out. What
could certainly be took away fromm the weekend is good will, a good social
time, and priceless experience for all of the players.
Chris Ross was the only one to pick up any points for
the team, taking a very hard fought half point against Derek Pugh. Chris
sacked a pawn in the opening for dark square domination, although he had to
subjet his king to the loss of the right for castling and had to spend a
bit of time regrouping his pieces. Pugh having won the pawn, struggled
through the compications, regrouped his own pieces and consolidated his
pawn advantage. However, due to
Chris’ domination of the dark squares, he was easily able to convert into
an end-game of opposite coloured bishops and thereby securing the half
point.
Bill Armstrong set out aggressively, but was soon put on the back foot
by his opponent’s own aggressive intentions. Bill’s king-side was smashed
up and the dark squares around his weakened king were to prove his undoing,
and he was subjected to fierce heavy piece play and the tactics flowed for
his opponent, who converted expertly and efficiently.
John Gallagher, bizarrely enough, followed Chris’ game on top board
and sacked the exact same pawn, but unfortunately, didn’t enter into the
complications that chris strove for. Gallagher attempted to open up the
position for his bishp pair but only succeeded in opening his own king to
attack, and his opponent rushed through quickly.
Norman Wraggg was put through the mill for a long suffering time,
and although valiant efforts by Norman
were evident, his opponent dealt blow after blow in the late middle-game
and early end-game, converting slight advantages into big ones and then
material ones. A fine flurrish to the game picked up even more material.
Rob Williams on bottom board gained an obvious advantage in the
opening, but proceeded to play inaccurately positionally-speaking in the
middle-game. Although he made a fine attempt to complicate matters by
sacking his queen for two rooks, he was unable to hold the position, not blockading
the position and holding on. His opponent ultimately sacked the queen back
by entering into a won king and pawn end-game.
